Catherine Barnes

Catherine Barnes studied at Camberwell School of Art and Goldsmiths' College. Working and exhibiting in London, she was a founder member of the Greenwich Printmakers In 1984 she moved to Winchester where she established Juno Studio, became a visiting lecturer in Art History at University of Southampton, and a visiting Artist at Southampton City Art Gallery.

From her studio in West Sussex Catherine paints landscapes that appear to be abstract or abstracts with landscape possibilities.

Structure, light and the illusion of space are perhaps sufficient goals in painting. I aim for significant structure, meaningful light and an implied narrative. Some works are from observation, a place visited, an unfinished building, a coast. Others begin from the division of the canvas. The emerging forms relate to the four sides of the canvas. They create their own world. Catherine does not feel that she necessarily has to reflect the world, only add to it.
